SAFETY FIRST: SEAFOODS

Follow this simple Guidelines...

  1. Eat up to 12 ounces (two six-ounce servings) per week of a variety of seafood that is lower in mercury, such as shrimp, canned light tuna or salmon.
  2. If you like albacore tuna, make that your only serving of fish for the week. Albacore tuna has more mercury than canned light tuna.
  3. Avoid eating large fish, such as swordfish or king mackerel, since bigger fish tend to have the highest levels of mercury. These fish can’t eliminate mercury as fast as they take it in. All women of childbearing age and children should avoid eating these types of fish.
  4. When you’re doing your own fishing, check local advisories about the safety of fish caught in local lakes, rivers and coastal areas. If no advice or informative is available, eat only six ounces of fish caught from local waters and then don’t consume any other fish during the week.
  5. When preparing a fish caught yourself, it is important to clean the fish by trimming away the skin and fatty tissue. This helps reduce the pollution in the fish.
In conclusion, as long as you follow the guidelines to eating seafood safely, the health benefits to eating seafood will far outweigh the risks from mercury.

SEAfood Selection Tips ~~

Three Tips to Steer Clear of Fisheries Collapse according to  Brian Halweil, senior researcher at the Worldwatch Institute.

Here are Brian’s tips on how to continue enjoying the health benefits of seafood while avoiding fishery depletions and the toxins present in many fish:

(1) Eat less of the big fish such as salmon, tuna, swordfish and sharks.

·         These are among the most vulnerable populations, and also the fish that live the longest, have the most fat, and accumulate the most toxins over their lifespan.

(2) Eat lower on the marine food chain, including smaller species such as clams, oysters, mollusks, anchovies, and sardines.

·         Smaller species are less endangered because they are more abundant, reproduce faster, and feed lower on the food chain (so they don’t consume other fish themselves.) They also have less fat and don’t accumulate as many toxins as the larger, longer-lived fish species.

(3) Keep in mind how fish are caught.

·         Some trawling nets are so large they could pull a 747 jet off the ocean floor. Instead, choose fish caught by line, pot, or net (or other artisanal methods) and avoid trawl-caught fish.

Seafood is a very delighted and delicious food to be consumed. It is also important for you to be very careful when selecting the seafood restaurant in terms of the seafood's freshness as well as their hygiene and cleanliness. Click the video below for some tips that useful for you ! :)

Kedai Makan Rahmat Pasir Gudang

There isn’t many seaside kampung style restaurants that have the honor having a Crown Prince to attend the opening ceremony, Kedai Makan Rahmat at Pasir Gudang is one of them (or perhaps the only).

It was officially launched by Duli Yang Amat Mulia Tunku Mahkota Johor, Ibrahim Ismail Ibni Sultan Iskandar in 1986, Kedai Makan Rahmat remains a very popular lunch destination for those who works around Pasir Gudang.

It is usually a wise idea to call ahead and book for a table before visiting Kedai Makan Rahmat, we did not do that and ended up waiting for about 20 odd minutes before a table is vacant, and already considered ourselves pretty lucky.

The restaurant is located at Kampung Pasir Putih, between Tanjong Puteri Golf Resort and the MMHE Yard. Parking isn’t usually a big problem, the restaurant is always very busy, but manage to maintain a pretty high standard of cleanliness. I only wish that the beach where the restaurant is built upon is half as good.

For your information, almost everyone comes here for essentially the same dish – Siakap Goreng (deep fried barramundi fish). For the six of us, we ordered three pretty good size siakap goreng, a portion of udang goreng (deep fried shrimp), a couple plates of kacang with sambal, two plates of petai with ikan bilis, and  a serving of kacang panjang (french beans) to satisfy our vitamin C quota.

The good thing about Rahmat is that even when really busy, food doesn’t take very long to be served once you’ve ordered and seated.

The siakap was as good as advertised, steamy hot, super fresh, and with absolutely soft and delicious flesh. The skin is usually discarded as the scales aren’t removed (I hope they did..). Mixing the fish with sambal petai, kacang, or sambal belacan proved to be the solution to the mystery of why this place is so damn popular. It was yummy!!!

I was more than satisfied by the food at Rahmat, and the wait time was certainly well worth it. Food and drinks came to about RM 25 or so per person, and considering the three big and fresh siakap fish we got, it was of pretty decent value as well.
I definitely would love to go back there again.

It’s All About Seafoods

Seafood is any form of sea life regarded as food by humans. Seafood prominently includes fish and shellfish. Shellfish include various species of molluscs, crustaceans, and echinoderms. Historically, sea mammals such as whales and dolphins have been consumed as food, though that happens to a lesser extent these days. Edible sea plants, such as some seaweeds and microalgae, are widely eaten as seafood around the world, especially in Asia (see the category of sea vegetables). In North America, although not generally in the United Kingdom, the term "seafood" is extended to fresh water organisms eaten by humans, so all edible aquatic life may be referred to as seafood. For the sake of completeness, this article includes all edible aquatic life.

The harvesting of wild seafood is known as fishing and the cultivation and farming of seafood is known as aquaculture, mariculture, or in the case of fish, fish farming. Seafood is often distinguished from meat, although it is still animal and is excluded in a strict vegetarian diet. Seafood is an important source of protein in many diets around the world, especially in coastal areas.

Most of the seafood harvest is consumed by humans, but a significant proportion is used as fish food to farm other fish or rear farm animal. Some seafoods (kelp) are used as food for other plants (fertilizer). In these ways, seafoods are indirectly used to produce further food for human consumption. Products, such as fish oil and spirulina tablets are also extracted from seafoods. Some seafood is feed to aquarium fish, or used to feed domestic pets, such as cats, and a small proportion is used in medicine, or is used industrially for non-food purposes (leather).
